Drive Home - Saturday February 25, 2012

We got up around 6:45 am and headed out on the road by 7:30 am. The roads were dry and we made good time. The entire trip took about 11hours to the boarder and we stopped in Windsor for dinner at a Tim Horton's. We both had a gift certificates from Christmas we had an opportunity to use them. There was a kind border attendant and she waved us through with a smile. :)
There was a Patsy Cline show at the theatre and Eve saw the lights on and came by to check the house. Now that is a great person to leave to manage your property.

We are home.
2 more days left before we go back to work.

Touring the Coast

We found a new spot to vacation in Tybee Georgia, or perhaps I should of said perhaps it would have been if we were in our teens. The place is a huge beach resort and lots of shops, water front hotels. We went down to the waterfront and checked out the Marine Science Centre.

We headed back to Savannah and got lost trying to retrace our steps to a Fabric store I had seen but did not have time to go to when we were here before. The finding your way around in the traffic was so frustrating for Dick and he decided we were getting out of there. Tonight we made it to Spartanburg and will head home tomorrow. The end of a short but sweet trip.

Heading north

Thursday
February 23, 2012

Before we left St. Augustine we drove to the Quilt Store but they did not
open until 10:00 am and it was only 9:30 am. Being as I have a number
of project still to complete I decided not to wait. On the way up the
coast we were informed about the St. Augustine Premiere Mall and I
wanted to find a place to get some new running shoes. This mall
features a Sak Fifth Avenue outlet and it was a blast to find blouse
on sale for $300.00. I did find a Famous Shoe Store and got the shoes
I needed.
The
weather is getting really warmer and warmer everyday. We decided
instead of going south we would head back north and enjoy our
accumulation of food at a picnic on Jekyll Island, Everytime we check
out the weather it says rain and winds but when you get up and out
the sun is shining.
By
the time we got to Jekyll it was windy but the sun was beautiful and
we headed to St. Andrews Picnic area. The island has evidence of
hurricanes and the trees are pulled up by the roots and turned over
on the beach. One of the most beautiful ones had been totally
undermined by the shifting sand and was still standing with the huge
root system exposed. I had headed down the beach to get a piece of
driftwood, but it was all attached. Not one piece was loose so I
could not bring one home. We toured the mansions and made it to the
Goodwin where the potters guild is in the basement but it had just
closed.
We
stayed at a Days Inn at New Brunswick and the wifi was down so no
post today. The building is under a huge renovation but the room we
had was already done. One of the features of the place we stayed was
there was an IHOP restaurant so that is where we had dinner.

Touring the St. Augustine Lighthouse

This morning we got up and planned a day of shopping but the sun was out and the temperature was in the high 70's so we headed down to Sailor's Exchange and I got some more Sumbrella and accessories for my projects. After we came back we headed out to the beach and discovered we were not able to get access as it is closed for now. There was a group of outdoor vendors, at the beach so we picked up some fresh produce. While driving out there we sighted the Lighthouse Museum so we decided to do the tour.
The Lighthouse had 219 steps and when we got to the top there was a 25 mile view today.

Poppa tying Knots at the Lighthouse

There are mirrors set up to show the top of the Light house
when the little ones look in the mini Light House.
We spent the afternoon climbing the 219 sets to take pictures at the top.

Back to the Ancient City

Today
we made our way south to St. Augustine. We got underway around 8:30
am and made it here around 12:00 pm. We found a place near the Bridge
of Lions (near the anchorage). We walked down to the city and did
some touring and site seeing in the oldest part of the city. Tomorrow
they are saying it will be overcast and cooler so a good day to do
some shopping and hit the Sailor Exchange.

script error on this page

I cannot load pics with the dialogue due to a script error. Very annoying!!!!!!!!!!!
We took the Oglethorpe Tour this morning and spent sometime in the historical district and the shopping area. This afternoon we went to see the Jepson Center and walked through the fantastic exhibitions. One was a light show, very modern. There was a children's gallery and it would have been a blast to show it to the girls. Nana played with the dress up clothes, one was a beautiful hand made work of Art. The temperature went back down to the 60's but the sun was out all day. Thankful for the warmth and vitamin D.

Dialogue for the previous Post

Elyssa and Julia,

Nana missed you today when Poppa and I went to see the Jepson Museum and Gallery. They had a glass house to play in and and spot to sit down and pick out a book. I picked a book for us to read called Emily's Art. Lots of things to see.

Miss you, Nana

This one is for Elyssa and Julia

Torrential Rain to Beautiful Day

We slept in until 8:30 am and had breakfast at the motel and headed out in a rainstorm. It poured all the way to Savannah and then when we got here and picked a motel we got our sandles nd short sleeves out to keep us cool. The temperature was up to 80 F and when the sun came out the water that had soaked into the ground was creating a steam bath. The moisture is so great for your skin and I cannot believe how quickly all the sandpaper skin, soaks it up. I wish we could bottle this as a makeup product. It was around 2:00 pm by the time we headed downtown to see the sights. Parking is free downtown on Sundays if you can find a spot. We parked at Orleans square and headed over to the City Market to see the shops that we remembered from our trip.
Some of the artist we meet on the trip are still there and we were happy to see Jim Pennington. One of our favourites is the woman in red, which his latest redition he offered for $650.00.
On the way back to the motel we picked up some chicken, salad and champagne. We were told at Garden City we could not buy the champagne on sunday but we could in Savannah.

Long drive over and done

We headed out at 4:00 am with a light slick of snow on the roads. By the
time we got to Windsor we were on dry pavement. We missed the I75
turn off at Detroit and so lost about a half hour figuring our way
back. Great opportunity to see downtown Detroit and all the lights.
By the time I got a map out and checked out the route, I realized you
can connect with the interstate on either 96 or 94 you just have to
head south on the first freeway you come to.
My favourite part of the drive was North Carolina on the way to
Asheville.
Tonight
we are back at Spartanburg, South Carolina at the Super 8.
Nice to have the Grandkids to share our trip with.

Return to the Coast 2012

The opportunity has availed itself for us to go back to the Atlantic coast and return to some of the spots we enjoyed so much on our trip in 2008-2009. This time we will be motoring and hopefully filling in some blanks that occured while on the trip. Our plan is to head out on Saturday February 17, 2012 early early morning and head south via Interstate 75 -4o -26. Our first stop will be Spartanburg and our first day of touring will be when we get to Savannah. (that beautiful city).
